The days may be the same, but hats are not! Over time, if not stored properly, your hat can become damaged and lose its original shine. That would be a shame, and to avoid this, let's look at a few tips for storing your precious headwear while protecting it.
PROTECT FROM LIGHT, DAMP AND DUST
Before storing, gently brush your hat with a brush suited to the material of your hat to remove any dust. Your hat will thank you! Inspect your hat regularly for stains and remove them quickly, using a sponge or flannel lightly soaked in soapy water, for example. You can also spray your leather hat with waterproofing spray to prepare it for rainy days.
Hats don't like light, especially UV rays, which can discolour and shrink a hat. If you're storing your hat until next season, keep it dry, in a cupboard or closed storage.
ON A SHELF OR COAT RACK
Why not dedicate a shelf to your hats? Lay them out flat and add a strip of cardboard around them, like a hat ring, the metal circle that hatters used to use to keep hats in shape. You can also stuff them with paper or plastic. Simply hang your favourite hat on the coat rack, provided the room doesn't get too much light and the rack isn't right above a radiator. The elegance of a hat speaks for itself!
IN A HAT BOX
Stack your hats from the smallest to the largest in a rigid hat box, very practical for transporting your hats safely. Take particular care when storing your Trilby or Pork pie with feathers. It's best to use one box per hat to avoid bending the feather. A simple paper bag works just as well.
HANGING ON THE WALL
If you choose to hang your current head accessories on the wall, the ideal solution is a wooden or metal coat hook, which looks very designer. If you have one or two hats, there are individual coat hooks. Hats are heavier than caps: the support must be solidly attached to prevent them from falling off.
Always store your hats with the utmost care and you'll still enjoy wearing them when you take them out of the cupboard!
