Baseball has been a popular sport in the United States since the mid-19th century and is an integral part of American culture. This craze for this popular sport gave birth in 1869 to the first professional baseball club: the Cincinnati Reds. Following the success of this club, the Major League Baseball (MLB) was created in 1875 and brought together the professional elite of the sport.
The North American League (which has a franchise in Canada) consists of two leagues: the "National League" and the "American League". The National League was formed in 1876, followed in 1903 by the creation of the American League. It was later that the first World Series was held in the USA. This competition organised by the MLB is the highest level in the current baseball hierarchy and pits the champions of each league against each other in the annual grand finale. The National League has 16 franchises and the American League 14.
Today there are 29 teams in the USA and one in Canada. The famous New York Yankees and their NY cap (the famous NY logo seen on New Era snapbacks) are by far the most awarded in the league, with no less than 27 titles to date (the LA Dodgers, by comparison, have won 6 titles).
